Service Missionaries
Service missionaries are longer-term volunteers who commit to 18 to 24 months serving 8 to 16 hours per week. They are often retired or have flexibility in their work schedules. Even with this commitment, service missionaries are afforded great flexibility to allow for vacations, significant time with family, and involvement in other activities.
The two general types of service are:
We are looking for senior couples or individuals who can teach or organize and support neighborhood residents with classes such as:
Beginning piano
English as a second language
Basic Computer literacy
Arrange for individual presentations by experts on topics like immigration law, starting a business, social security, retirement, marriage and family relationships, etc.
We also need couples or individuals who can assess home repair or yard cleanup needs of homeowners or renters who have responsibility for home maintenance. We seek to help those who can’t help themselves with these projects. Missionary couples organize neighbors to help with some projects and involve other volunteers from outside our area for larger or more complex projects.
Ongoing Volunteers
Ongoing volunteers commit to serve for a few months to a year or more, committing 2 to 4 hours per week and providing specialized service such as:
Teaching a particular class like those listed above.
Setting up and supervising at the Community Resource Center (CRC) one or two times a week. The CRC is open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Serving as a project organizer for a specific service project. These projects are seasonal, typically during the months of April to October. Each project would typically involve an individual home and would entail meeting with the homeowner to determine their needs and their ability to provide at least some of the work and financing and organizing help as appropriate.
Help organizing large social gatherings (parking lot party, talent night, etc.).
Project Volunteers
Project volunteers work on a specific project. Ideally notify us in advance of attendance, but may just show up.
